Address for correspondence Brian Koo, MD Department of Neurology, University Hospitals Case Medical Center, 11100 Euclid Avenue, Cleveland, OH 44106, USA Tel: +1-216-844-3422 Fax: +1-216-983-0792 E-mail: [email protected] Periodic limb movements during sleep (PLMS) are spontaneously occurring movements of the legs which occur repetitively throughout the sleeping period. The clinical significance of these movements is unclear but when they occur frequently, sleep fragmentation can result. PLMS occur commonly in persons with the restless legs syndrome and also in the elderly even without sleep complaints. PLMS are not specific and can occur in the setting of several different diseases, including essential hypertension, stroke and sleep apnea. In this review, we cover briefly the epidemiology of PLMS and then go more into depth concerning physiology and then adverse effects associated with PLMS. J Korean Sleep Res Soc 2012;9:23-27

Sleep architecture alterations in patients with periodic limb movements disorder during sleep and sleep breathing disorders
INTRODUCTION Sleep movement disorders includes mainly periodic limb movement and others. The more frequent breathing disorders are: obstructive sleep apnea-hypopnea syndrome and primary snoring. OBJECTIVE To compare sleep architecture in periodic limb movements and breathing disorders of different severity, and weight their interactions. METHODS We compared sleep architecture in 160 patient...
متن کاملRepetitive Arm Movements During Sleep: A Polysomnographic Assessment
Sleep-related movement disorders should be differentiated from parasomnias, sleep-associated behavioral disorders, and epilepsy. Polysomnography (PSG) is the gold standard in evaluating such disorders. Periodic leg movement disorder during sleep (PLMS), hypnic jerks, bruxism, rhythmic movement disorder, restless legs syndrome, and nocturnal leg cramps have broadly been discu...

1221 THERE HAS BEEN A GROWING INTEREST IN ETHNIC AND RACIAL DIVERSITY IN RELATION TO SLEEP PARAMETERS. THE STUDY OF DIFFERENCES IN SLEEP between racial groups may lead to an increased understanding of genetic and environmental contributions to sleep physiology and its disorders. Numerous studies of sleep have examined differences in sleep parameters and sleep related symptoms by gender and age,...

This is a large cross-sectional study which aimed to investigate comorbidity rate, degree of sleep-related breathing disorder, polysomnigraphically diagnosible rapid eye movement sleep behavior disorder/rapid eye movement sleep without atonia and periodic limb movements during sleep in Japanese drug-naïve patients with narcolepsy-spectrum disorders. A total of 158 consecutive drug naïve patient...
متن کاملMortality associated with periodic limb movements during sleep in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis patients.
OBJECTIVE To describe the prevalence and severity of periodic limb movements during sleep in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis patients and to explore this fact as a predictor of severity of the condition with respect to mortality. METHODS In this case-control study, questionnaire and polysomnographic data were analyzed from 35 amyotrophic lateral sclerosis patients. Controls were matched by age,...
